Whether you are going abroad on holidays or visiting family or travelling for work it’s good to know you have health cover in place to give you peace of mind. In the light of the current pandemic situation it is advised that you check the government’s advice on international travel and your overseas cover before travelling.

Irish Life Health gives you a free travel insurance policy through Allianz Assistance when you choose one of our travel personalised packages.

You can claim back some of the cost of your travel vaccinations provided by the Executive Medical Care Ltd trading as Tropical Medical Bureau.

We will contribute towards the cost of a travel vaccine consultation when provided by the Executive Medical Care Ltd trading as Tropical Medical Bureau.

What you need to know if getting treatment abroad

If you are rushed to hospital and admitted as an inpatient, please ensure someone contacts the International Emergency Assistance Service as soon as possible. Call 00353 148 17840 in advance of receiving your emergency care to have your medical care pre-authorised and arranged by us.

Benefits

As an Irish Life Health member you have access to our team of qualified nurses for non-emergency medical information. This is a telephone-based service that provides general, non-diagnostic information over the phone. You can call our International Nurse 24/7 line any time night or day for advice on any health issue you are concerned about. You can discuss your symptoms and worries and receive comprehensive information on a range of health related topics. Remember to have your membership number to hand before you call. You can claim back some of the cost of your prescriptions filled abroad

Your plan provides cover from €55,000/ up to €100,000 for hospital (in-patient) accident and emergency cover while on a temporary stay abroad.

Health Insurance is not a substitute for travel insurance and we also recommend that you purchase travel insurance before you depart. We also recommend that you obtain a European Health Insurance Card before you travel. You can obtain information on how to apply for this card on www.ehic.ie
 

We will cover your medical costs for emergency care in a medical facility abroad whilst on a temporary stay abroad not exceeding 31 days.

You can claim back reasonable accommodation, local transport and food costs incurred by your companion as a result of such companion remaining with you whilst you are receiving your emergency care.

As a member of Irish Life Health you have unlimited access to our International Second Opinion Service. This benefit offers an independent review of your diagnosis and treatment plan from one of a range of leading medical centres around the world.

Under this benefit we will cover the following:


> Hospital costs: We will cover your hospital costs in a medical facility abroad up to the amount that would be covered under your In-patient Benefits


> Consultant’s fees: Consultants practicing overseas are treated as standard rate consultants. Under this benefit Irish Life Health will cover your consultant’s fees to the same level as would be covered under your plan if you were treated by a standard rate consultant whilst admitted to a medical facility in Ireland to receive your surgical procedure.

Under this benefit we will cover the following:


> Hospital costs: We will cover your hospital costs in a medical facility abroad up to the amount that would be covered under your In-patient Benefits


> Consultant’s fees: Consultants practicing overseas are treated as standard rate consultants. Under this benefit Irish Life Health will cover your consultant’s fees to the same level as would have been covered under your plan if you were treated by a standard rate consultant whilst admitted to a medical facility in Ireland to receive your surgical procedure.

Returning Home

Getting you and your companion home safely

Travelling back home after emergency treatment abroad can be stressful. Call our international assistance number 00353 148 17840 and we will help and arrange for you to be brought home if this is medically necessary.

Returning Home

Benefits

We will arrange and cover the costs (up to a specified amount) of your transport back to Ireland where you are unable to use your return transport to return to Ireland for medical reasons.

You can claim back the transport costs incurred by your companion to return to Ireland where they have missed their return mode of transport as a result of remaining with you whilst you were receiving your emergency care.

Under this benefit you can claim a contribution from us towards the following expenses where they arise as a result of you missing your return travel to Ireland because it was medically necessary for you to receive in-patient emergency care abroad:


> The cost of reasonable alternative economy class travel to Ireland; and


> The cost of additional reasonable alternative accommodation until you are deemed fit to travel by your treating health care provider.

Under this benefit you can claim a contribution from us towards the following expenses where they arise as a result of you missing your return travel to Ireland because it was medically necessary for you to receive out-patient emergency care abroad:


> The cost of reasonable alternative economy class travel to Ireland; and


> The cost of additional reasonable alternative accommodation until you are deemed fit to travel by your treating health care provider.
